Australian Telephone Tokens

The Post Master General's Department issued a type of token, usually known as a "P.M.G. Penny". (see OZ008) These were copper tokens and used to operate "long breach" public telephones (see image) by maintenance employees. They were usually issued approximately six at a time which overcame the necessity to use pennies for testing purposes. At the time when the P.M.G. penny tokens were in use calls cost two pence. These tokens were also used whenever public telephones were cleared of money to ensure that the mechanism of the phone was functioning correctly after clearance. This test penny token had an Australia-wide application and was withdrawn during the early 1950's.
- The "SUPT TELE" stamped on some tokens stands for Superintendent (of) Telephones.
