Auchtermuchty Co-operatives
AUCHTERMUCHTY CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1845-1961
The society was formed in 1845 as the Auchtermuchty and Vicinity Provisions Company. The society became registered around 1872. In February 1873 there was a vote to give 50% dividend to non-members and to use metal checks[1]. The vote was split on non-members recieving a dividend and the vote for checks was a majority, but less than the required two thirds for a change to be made. These measured were approved later that year. The society changed its name to the Auchtermuchty and Vicinity Co-operative Provision Society in 1885.
Another society, Auchtermuchty Coal Society, was formed in 1857 to supply coal. In February 1873 the members voted for a higher dividend and lower share value increase. Shares valued at 12s could be redeemed for 9s. The society registered around 1880 as the Auchtermuchty Co-operative Coal Society. At a meeting in August 1902 it was resolved that the society should be disolved as soon as possible with Auchtermuchty and Vicinity taking over the business[2]. The business was sold to Auchtermuchty and Vicinity in 1903 and the society wound up[3]. After the sale there was £90 in the bank, which would have given a value of 10s for each 15s share.
When Auchtermuchty and Vicinity acquired the business of Auchtermuchty Co-operative Coal, it became the only Auchtermuchty co-operative society. This led to it changing it's name to Auchtermuchty Co-operative Society, which happened before 1913. The society operated the coal business as a sperate operation, declaring a seperate divdidend. In 1904 the society declared a full dividend of 2s 6d per £1, with 1s per £1 for the coal department[4]. In 1913 the society declared a full dividend of 2s 10d per £1, with 1s per £1 for the coal department[5].
The society joined to Cupar in 1961 to form North Fife. North Fife was taken over by the SCRS in 1971.
