Almaty in Wikipedia

Almaty is since 1997 no longer the capital of Kazakhstan, but it is still the largest city in the country. It reached the critical threshold for an underground system under Soviet rules of a population of 1 million in the late 1980s. Construction of the Almaty Metro started on 7 September 1988. The system is situated in an area of high tectonic activity, which probably complicated the project. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and Kazakh independence, the government was unable to finance further construction until 2005. The system finally opened to the public on 1 December 2011. It is the 16th underground train system in the former USSR.

The current logo of the Almaty metro shows an M in a stylised tunnel.
