Alloa Co-operatives
ALLOA CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1862-1968
The society was formed in 1862. The society opened a branch in Kincardine in 1880.
In 1886 the society was requesting small checks to exchange for £1 checks. It was also requesting Savings Bank depositors to send in their books to add interest. In 1893 the society suspended three members for buying checks from non-members. In October 1898 it was declared that all current metal checks would become worthless after 11 October - the society issued new checks.
The society opened a branch in Airth in 1908. The society merged with Alva in 1968 to form Alloa and District. This society became part of the Forth Valley Group, formed in 1969. The societies in Forth Valley Group merged to form Forth Valley Co-operative in 1979. Forth Valley joined with Fife Regional and Central Fife at the beginning of 1987 to form Fife and Forth. However Fife Regional was heavily in debt, so the society had to be rescued by a CWS takeover in June 1988.
