Algemeene Arbeiders-Coöperatie "De Dageraad" (General workers cooperation "Dawn") was established in 1900. It boasted its own bakery, dairy factory and grocery shops, where members could do their shopping at favourable prices. The founders included socialist leaders such as journalist P.L. Tak, politician Floor Wibaut, trade unionist Henry Polak and poet Herman Gorter.

From 1908, the head office and bread factory were located in a complex on Toldwarsstraat 1-7 in Amsterdam. Photo: bread plant and the cooperative's bread deliverers with their carts, around 1915. A bread plant with space for eleven ovens was located in the basement. There were also warehouses for the cooperative's groceries, and thirteen homes. In 1911, De Dageraad's facilities for members were a bread factory, 3 bakeries, a dairy plant, 9 groceries, a savings bank with five branches, a tailor shop and a ready made clothes shop. In 1917, the cooperative founded a housing association, also named De Dageraad.

In 1921, De Dageraad merged with several other cooperatives to form the politically neutral cooperative "Samenwerking". This cooperation merged in 1963 with some consumer cooperatives from outside Amsterdam to form Co-op Centrum. The bakery was closed in 1965, when a new bakery was opened in Markthallen, on Jan van Galenstraat in Amsterdam. The building is now a protected homes complex.
