In 1817, the General Hospital (Algemeen Ziekenhuis) was opened on Lange Jufferstraat. It was part of Utrecht university's faculty of medicine. Until 1925, its official name was Academisch Ziekenhuis Utrecht (AZU). From 1925 to 1971 it was known as Stads- en Academisch Ziekenhuis (SAZU), as a consequence of merging of city and state interests. Afterwards it reverted to the old name. Since 1999, it is part of Universitair Medisch Centrum (UMC - University Medical Centre).
