Algemeene Maatschappij voor Jongeren (AMVJ), general society for young people was established in 1918. It resisted segmentation, but it still opened top positions for protestants only. Jo Eijkman, a protestant preacher, was a driving force. He got AMVJ to establish a holiday camp when it was offered some land. However, its main ambition was to offer a "home away from home". That project was realised in 1928, just before the opening of the Amsterdam Olympic Games. The building offered not just accommodation, restaurants, meeting and reading rooms, but also various sports facilities. As shown on the photo, the building is now occupied by a luxury hotel chain.

AMVJ is characterised by its great interest in sports. It introduced basketball and volleyball in the Netherlands and founded the first Dutch table tennis club. From 1922, AMVJ had its own sports grounds in Amsterdam. Because of its neutral and open discussions, the nazis repressed the organisation. By 1950, AMVJ was once again functioning well. When secularisation advanced, AMVJ fell back on sports and culture. That could tide it over until the early 70s, when the last of its assets were sold. The proceeds were deposited in a fund that finances social and cultural projects for young people in Amsterdam.
