know the winner ????
We live in a democracy called India. It takes a few years after the first strikes of a commemorative coin are released to some important guests that the issue comes into regular circulation. This is a very very important  ;) matter to be decided so fast.

There is a report in the news papers today that some time during the fiscal 2010 - 11, the symbol for the Rupee would be officially finalised.

Dear Friends
Last year GOI has organized a design competition to finalize a new symbol for our Rupees. Major international currencies like Dollar, Pound, Yen etc have their own symbols.

GOI has shortlisted five designs.Union cabinet will select one design today. The design is like english alphabet R with vertical line missing. Thus it also resembels hindi alphaber Ra.

I never applied for the competition but I also imagined a combination of Hindi / English R

Once design is frozen it will have to be publicized.GOI will have to print it on all notes and coins alongwith denomination. I wonder if they will discontinue printing Rs.

A major problem will be to convince Mr Bill Gates to build a key for it on PCs!!

He doesn't need to create a key for it on PC's just have to have a unicode name for it.  Similarly £ becomes the £.

Except that £ is not Unicode but HTML. ;)  Would be U+00A3, I think. And actually there is a "rupee" equivalent, except that will get you the current Rs symbol: http://www.decodeunicode.org/en/u+20a8  So I guess a new one would be needed.

And of course people at least in India will then want to have that on their computers - just as people who use the dollar (, pound, euro, etc.) in everyday life want to see the corresponding symbol $ (, £, €, etc.) right on the keyboard. Attached below, by the way, are the five finalists ...

IMO,all the symbols are equally BAD!! I'd prefer design# 3,it is better than the remaining 4 :D

Seems that the government is having second thoughts as well. ;)

"The Cabinet was to finalise the symbol today, but the matter was deferred after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee asked for more time to go through the short-listed signs, sources said." http://www.ptinews.com/news/740593_Cabinet-defers-decision-on-rupee-symbol

Now it will take another 2-3 years to finalize the symbol and then another 2 years to actually see them on notes and coins. ::) ::)

Just saw the press conference regarding final rupee symbol. The new symbol will appear on every Indian banknote in next 6 months, however they didn't say anything about coins,so coins may remain as they are.

The symbol has been designed by IIT(Indian Institute of Technology)Mumbai student D.Uday Kumar. He said that he was working on the design for more than 3 months. He first designed about 100 symbols, then shortlisted 10,and then decided to send this one for the final competition.

The symbol shows a Devanagari र (of rupee),it also resembles Roman R with the vertical lines missing. The top two horizontal lines correspond to equality sign, and the upper half is also identical with the (mirror image of) euro sign.
