Newport's first tramway lines, ran by horse drawn trams, was operated by the Newport Tramways Company from February 1875. In July 1894, the system was taken over by the Newport Corporation. The corporation electrified the network in 1903 and re-branded it Newport Corporation Tramways (NCT). The first buses ran from 1893. By 1937, all trams were replaced by buses. The network was nationalised following the local government act 1972. As a consequence of the local transport act 1985, which privatised local public transport, the Newport City Council, in March 1986, created Newport Transport (NT), which still operates, under the brand name of Newport Bus.
