Israel Telephone tokens
As in the British model, telephone services have always been provided by the postal organisation. At independence, in 1948, they were the responsibility of the ministry of transport. In 1951, a separate ministry of postal services was established. It was renamed ministry of communications in 1970. It acted through the Israel Postal Company. In order to facilitate major reforms, this company was reorganised as the Postal Authority in 1986, only to be succeeded by The Israel Postal Company Ltd. in 2006. The gazelle in an oval is the logo of the Postal authority. The picture shows it on a philatelic item commemorating the opening of the Tel Hashomer Post Office. Large holed telephone tokens were in use from 1953 until their replacement in 1963. Note that the tokens use the colloquial, phonetic rendition from English تلفون By contrast, Algerian and Tunisian tokens use the official word الهاتف - al-Hatef.
