In 1899, the Ilkeston Corporation Tramways Act was passed to allow the construction of an electric tramway, bypassing horse-drawn trams altogether. In the face of increasing losses, the Ilkeston Council sold the tramway to the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Tramways Company in 1916. In 1928, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire was given power to operate trolleybuses. The first line started operating in 1931, and on 5 October 1933 the last tram ran. The last of the trolleybus lines were taken over by regular buses on 25 April 1953. The area is currently served by Trentbarton.
