Ayr Corporation Tramways opened on 26 September 1901. On 30 December 1931, the system was taken over by the Scottish Motor Traction Company based in Edinburgh and closed the following day.
After privatisation in 1985, Ayr was serviced by Western Scottish, Western buses and Stagecoach West Scotland.
